Bank Codes for Every Nigerian Bank

Lost your card at a market, out of data, or standing at a POS that won't connect? A bank's USSD code lets you move money from almost any phone. This page lists the root code for each Nigerian bank we cover and shows whether we have finished checking it. Pick your bank to see every shortcut it publishes: transfers, balance, airtime, blocking a card.

Nothing here is copied from forums. Each code is matched against the bank's own website or official social account, and the date of that check sits beside it. Our editorial policy explains the process in full.

One mix-up brings a lot of people here. A USSD code such as *894# is something you dial to operate your own account. A sort code identifies a bank branch for local clearing, and a SWIFT code identifies the bank for money arriving from abroad. Nobody dials those two. If a sender has asked for one, use our bank code lookup instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is a USSD code?
A USSD code is a short string that starts with * and ends with #, such as *737# or *894#. You dial it like a phone number and a text menu appears, letting you check your balance, buy airtime or send money without mobile data or a smartphone. Most bank codes only work from the phone number registered on your account.
Which banks have USSD codes in Nigeria?
Every major commercial bank runs one. The table above lists the banks we have pages for, including GTBank (*737#), First Bank (*894#), UBA (*919#), Zenith (*966#), Union Bank (*826#), Sterling (*822#), Wema (*945#), FCMB (*329#) and Ecobank (*326#). Banks marked Checking are ones we have not yet confirmed against the bank's own channels.
Are USSD codes free to use?
Not always. Some banks charge per transaction and publish the fee. GTBank, for example, lists ₦20 for a transfer to another GTBank account, ₦80 to other banks and ₦10 for a balance check, with airtime free. Your mobile network may also bill for the USSD session itself. Each bank page notes any charge the bank publishes.
What if my bank isn't listed?
We only publish a code after checking it on the bank's own website or official channels, so a bank may show Checking or be missing while that happens. Until then, call the customer-care number printed on the back of your card or check the bank's official app, and avoid codes copied from unofficial sites.
Should I use my bank's USSD code or its sort code?
They do different jobs. Dial the USSD code to use your own account from your phone. Give someone a sort code or SWIFT code only when they need to identify your bank to send money, usually for cheque clearing or a payment from abroad.
