USSD Codes for Nigerian Fintech Apps

Fintech wallets were built app-first, so their USSD side tends to be leaner than a bank's. Where GTBank publishes a shortcut for nearly every task, an app such as PalmPay gives you a single root code and lets a menu do the rest. Moniepoint sits in between: one base code, *5573#, with a few published extensions.

That simplicity cuts both ways. There is less to memorise, but fewer direct shortcuts means more menu steps on a slow connection. The codes that matter most are often the emergency ones, such as OPay's separate locks for the account and the card, because you reach for them when the app itself is gone with your phone.

The table below shows each app's root code and when we last confirmed it against the provider's own pages. Apps still marked Checking have no code we could confirm yet. How we check is set out in our editorial policy. Looking for a traditional bank instead? See bank codes.

Frequently asked questions

Do fintech apps need USSD codes if they have an app?
The app needs data, a charged smartphone and the phone itself. USSD needs none of those beyond a SIM. It matters most when your phone is stolen: OPay, for instance, publishes *955*131# to lock your account, which you can dial from someone else's handset. It also helps when the network is too weak for the app to load.
Which fintech apps work without internet?
Any service with a USSD code can be used without mobile data. Of the apps on this page, Moniepoint (*5573#), OPay (*955#) and MTN MoMo (*671#) each publish one. What you can do offline varies: Moniepoint lists shortcuts for transfer, balance and airtime, while OPay's published codes are mainly for locking your account or card. PalmPay and Kuda show Checking because we have not yet confirmed a code row for them from their own channels.
Is OPay, Moniepoint or PalmPay USSD free?
None of the three publishes a USSD charge on the official pages we checked, so we can't promise it is free. Your mobile network may bill for the USSD session, and the provider can change its fees. Check the fees section inside the app before relying on a USSD transfer costing nothing.
Why does my app's USSD code only show a menu?
Several apps publish one root code and handle everything through menus, rather than a long list of shortcuts. OPay works this way for everyday actions. Dial the root code from your registered number and follow the prompts; we only list a shortcut once the provider has published it.
