Code for Sterling Bank transfer
*822*Amount*AccountNumber# works for Sterling and any other Nigerian bank. Sterling's registration links all your Sterling accounts automatically, so the menu lets you pick which one to send from.
The code for Sterling Bank transfer follows the amount-first order: *822*5000*0123456789# starts a ₦5,000 transfer to that account. Sterling then asks you to choose the beneficiary's bank, confirm the name and enter your transaction PIN. The same string works for Sterling-to-Sterling and Sterling-to-other-bank transfers.
If the code doesn't work, register first. Dial *822*1# and follow the prompts. Transfers above ₦20,000 fail until you raise your limit, as explained below. A weak signal can drop the session part-way through, so check your balance or alerts before you retry, or you may send the money twice.
The ₦20,000 limit and how to raise it
Sterling is unusually clear about limits. Registration gives you ₦20,000 by default. To go above that, up to ₦100,000 per transaction, you raise the limit with your debit card, and Sterling asks for a second PIN on those larger transfers. If a transfer above ₦20,000 fails, this is usually why.
Block, statement and account opening
*822*911# blocks your account. *822*4# requests a statement, and *822*7# opens a new account.
Contacting Sterling
Sterling lists its contact centre as 0700 822 0000, along with its social media accounts. We haven't confirmed a Sterling WhatsApp number from an official Sterling page, so we don't publish one.
Looking for Stanbic IBTC instead? It's a different bank with different codes, and we haven't published its page yet.
