Why MoMo works differently from bank apps
MoMo is run by MoMo Payment Service Bank, a subsidiary of MTN Nigeria, licensed by the CBN in 2022. Because it belongs to the network operator, your wallet is tied to your MTN SIM. You open it by dialling *671# on that line, no app or branch visit needed, and the phone number itself acts as the account number.
That makes MoMo the easiest of these wallets to start with, but also means it is built around MTN lines. If someone sends money to your MoMo account from a bank app, they select MoMo PSB as the bank and enter your MTN number without the first zero.
